HISTORY

03) Founded in 1525, trujillo is a beautiful city on the caribbean coast, with beautiful, beaches, stunning landscapes and a rich colonial history, since it was one of the main ports used by the spanish crown in the caribbean during the XVI and XVII centuries. Punta Caxinas was the first place the spaniards reached in the American continent, and according to oral tradition, it was also the the place where they held the first mass in continental soil. The importance of Trujillo’s port declined after some years due to the threat of attacks from pirates and its proximity to the region of la Mosquitia that at the time had continuous rebellions instigated by the British, who wanted to take over this rich region, abundant in wild cocoa, indigo plants and timber. Due to the British hegemony in this zone, the principal economic activities moved to the Guf of Honduras, specifically to the port of omoa, also because of its convenient location to defend against the attacks from dreadful buccaneers and pirates who prowled around the caribbean. The city of Trujillo maintains its legacy from the spanish colonial times and its impressive vestiges. The recently-restored Santa Barbara fortress may be the most important one of all. Trujillo also features ist old Cementery and San Juan Bautista Cathedral, which have been declared national monuments, as well as Don Rufino Galan Museum, where you can admire a miscellaneous collection of pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern local artifacts.unfornately, continuous attacks from pirates and subsequent fires and looting have destroyed most of the original colonial buildings, but Trujillo’s Historial center still preserves beautiful buildings of styles resulting from the varied commercial activity of the port, in a rich blend of single-story buildings of spanish colonial architecture and two-story structures of different European styles.

ATTACKS FROM PIRATES.

04)Since Trujillo was one of the main ports of the spanish crown at the beginning of the colonization of the Americas, it was constatly under attack from pirates and buccaneers. The first attack from were reported in the middle of the XVI Century. French pirates threatened the spanish ships because of the war between Francis I, King of France, and charles V, King of spain, in from of the spanish coats at first, and afterwards they literally hunted every spanish ship that sailed in the atlantic. Later, pirates from other countries began to cruise along the caribbean looking for an easy loot. In numerous occasions, the atacks were so severe that the city was about to be abandoned for most of the XVIII century, ,making the spanish authorities to tri to resettle the city in 1789 by sendyng new colonizers from Europe to revive the historic city and port of Trujillo.

HISTORICAL CENTER

05) Trijullo has played an important role throughout the history of Honduras, since it was one of the first settlements founded by the spanish colonizers. The city was growing and also becoming one of the main ports of the spanish crow. Trujillo was so important that its administration depended directly from the General captaincy of Guatemala, and its administration way transferred to Comayagua just at the end of the spanish colony. The city’s historical center is a rich blend of different European styles, and even with a little American influence, which started when the American banana companies were established in the city . Originally of a Spanish design, the second stories of many buildings were adapted to diverse European styles. As a result of the influence of many immigrants that once they settled in city, they began to have an effect on Trujillo’s architectural style, but always keeping the spanish design in their first story.

Unfortunately, the constant attaks and massive fires that the city endured during ist history have partially destroyed some of its buildings, and they have somewhat diminished the beauty and splendor that Trujillo had in the past.

Gradually, the citizens of Trujillo have become aware of the importance of keeping and preserving the axisting structures, and the works to restore and organize the area of Historical center have already begun. Since it was declared a national monument in 1990, there have bean several efforts to maintain it and preserve it for the future generation, so that they would learn more about our rich colonial past and the important role of Trujillo during that critical period of our national history.

There is not enougn historical evidence that the plans to build the fort continued during the XVIII century. when the city was resettled by the Spanish authorities in 1789, the idea to build the fort was reconsidered, and spanish crown sent several envoys to recommend the best site in the Atlantic to build a fort, choosing the Omoa bay because of its advantageous geographic position, far away from La Mosquitia, then a territory controlled by the British.
